Is a heat pump actually cheaper than a gas furnace for heating a home?

Short answer: yes, for most homes. A modern cold-climate heat pump runs at 300%+ efficiency (it moves heat instead of burning fuel) [energystar.gov], so even at today's electricity prices it undercuts gas on the monthly bill in nearly every U.S. state [eia.gov].
